Knut Wimberger and Greensteps.Me

  • 2024.05.12, Franz Nahrada: Recently I made an amazing acquaintance, never thought I would meet a person that is able to meaningfully connect the global and the local to such an extent. I am talking about an Austrian teacher who lived for many years in China and recently returned home. His name is Knut Wimberger and he founded an educational program called 'green steps' and a platform named the ARK. I met him just about a week ago in person and I was really blown away by the depth of his approach.
  • Knut Wimberger at Ark
  • Of course, Knut puts education at the center of things, but the base of his multi layered endavour goes far beyond this; even beyond Christopher Alexandersconcept of independent regions, beyond the traditional bioregions narrative. Its a true framework for global action based on radical decentralisation and the intricate connection between building knowledge and building a relation to the real backbone of our living systems, the trees.
  • Please be sure that you looked at these two intro videos of the ARC:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCRBgCYRyTI

It starts with questioning the mental map of nation states! Introduces the Overview effect, the elaborated concept of 14 realms, 185 bio-regions and consequently the (smaller) eco-regions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8UaQVmsttM

the second video is about learning how to grow and visualize ones Bioregional Identity.

Please consider this approach as a valuable Framework for our activities. Its the result of decades of scientific work !

Bioregional Carrying Capacity Session 3: Sweet Spots & Absolute Assessment

We at r3.0 are stoked to announce the 3rd in our series of Sessions exploring Bioregional Carrying Capacity, this time featuring two prominent scientists whose work we deeply respect: Dr. Avit K. Bhowmik Bhowmik, presenting on his 2020 "Powers of 10" study https://lnkd.in/gQZCDmpf that identified "sweet spots" of scale (that align with the bioregional scale) for climate action; and Anders Bjørn, presenting on his Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) methodology https://lnkd.in/gruahqNU that integrates carrying capacity assessment at its core.

This Session also represents an expansion of the partnership between r3.0 and the Design School for Regenerating Earth. We piloted the first 2 sessions for the Design School audience. Design School Co-Founders Joe Brewer & Penny L. Heiple agree the sessions were so successful, it makes sense to expand them into public sessions. We appreciate this gesture, which further solidifies the already strong partnership between the Design School and r3.0!

The Session runs on Tuesday, 11 February from 10-11:30am ET. It will run in a fairly standard format of presentations of content to discuss up front (about the first half of the 90 minutes), leading into facilitated dialogue in the second half of our time together.

You can access the session on the r3.0 Zoom line:

https://lnkd.in/gswTJqsm Meeting ID: 819 5167 2148 Passcode: 902564

This Session also represents the kick-off of exploration of a Bioregional Carrying Capacity (BCC) Fund as an element of the Earth Regeneration (ER) Fund https://lnkd.in/gmBkdVmg. As you can see in this video https://lnkd.in/ggUPM4uA the ER Fund is a platform for steering the flow of resources that represent multiple capitals, not just financial capital. Another key capital resource is narrative, so we welcome the opportunity to expand the reach and richness of the story of bioregional carrying capacity measurement and management through this BCC Fund, to weave into the broader tapestry of storytelling supported by the ER Fund.

Ralph Thurm and I deeply thank Joe & Penny for their collaboration on these multiple lines of exploration, and we also deeply appreciate the Design School community for engaging with such depth of care in the Bioregional Carrying Capacities dialogues thus far -- we look forward to further deepening the dialogue going forward!

(Please note that these sessions complement our Open Dialogue series of monthly convenings, focused on the broader ecosystem of bioregioning.)
