Dave Darby has looked how to make things accessible to ordinary people rather than the academic discourses that commonly are found and are arcane, inaccessible and lack practicality. He does this through interviews which he posts on his website Low Impact.

Dave recently corresponded with Marcus Petz after having watched his video about Econet as a host.

Thanks Marcus

I think that my deepest value in life might be wise leadership for my species, to cope with existing problems, and even more difficult problems coming down the track. (I think that absolute truth is beyond humans)

We've had patriarchal, plutocratic, expansionist leadership for 10,000 years, and now we might be on the cusp of extinction. It's the opposite of wise leadership.

I see my role as helping end plutocracy, before we can even think about what governance system might deliver the wisest leadership. I see growing the commons as the way to take economic power (I include credit commons as central to the commons). Then, when we have economic power, we then have to decide what governance system we want (to support the commons in the way that liberal democracy supports capitalism).

I guess some sort of deliberative democracy / citizens' assemblies would be top of most people's list of systems. But you talked about diverse positions in society, and I think that democracy might not fit with a pluralist society – it might be too Western/rational. Where possible, Muslims, for example, might prefer Sharia to any form of democracy.

And even if we do manage to insert deliberative democracy into species-level governance, I'm not sure a group of randomly-selected people are going to come up with the wisest decisions. Wiser than plutocracy disguised as democratic electoral politics, for sure, but not really wise enough. Selecting for wisdom isn't easy. It's not just about intelligence. There's compassion and integrity in there too. I've thought about it a lot – but we're a long way from needing to work it out. Right now, the main task is the take the economy. And the commons is the only way I can see that we might do that.

I just wish there were more hours in the day, or I could live longer, then I can think about more than how to build the commons in a replicable way in Stroud.
